The Sleep MD is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of snoring and sleep apnea. Treatment recommendations made in my clinic are individualized based on your history and your full examination including pharyngoscopy (where a small camera is placed through your nose to examine your airway when you snore). This allows me to identify where the problems arise and provide very high success rates. My approach to treatment is: 1. Document the degree of airway obstruction I often recommend a level 3 sleep study. This is a small device you bring home, sleep with it, and bring it back the next day. This is now offered at very low cost by local private businesses. It provides useful information on the severity of obstruction which helps determine treatment options while limiting any risks. 2. Maximize medical therapy This involves treating allergies, nasal obstruction, and acid reflux. I will discuss smoking cessation, weight loss, and exercise. I work with local businesses to try to limit the cost of some of these programs for people with a sleep disorder. Proper sleep hygene and sleep positioning may limit snoring and improve sleep apnea. 3. CPAP - Reserved for patients with sleep apnea CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is the gold standard. This is a machine and mask you wear when you are sleeping. With the new machines and masks available today, most people find CPAP comfortable. Very quickly energy, mood, memory, concentration, and often libido return. The chance of workplace and car accidents are reduced and overall health is improved. 4. Appliance therapy and nasal dilators 5. When all else fails... consider surgical intervention This is individualized and may require several small procedures to provide a high chance of success while mimimizing discomfort and time off work. I have made every attempt to provide unbiased information on a range of topics on the site and will update the information monthly based on current medical literature. |
